We watched a film with school for English last week. The film was called 'Remember the titans'. It's about white school having to admit black students for the first time. In the film, you follow how the football team faces big challenges as they have to play mixed together for the first time. This film is highly recommended! It was super beautiful and inspiring. I'm going to explain my favourite scene!
Coach Yoast and coach Herman
At lunch,
Lastik sits down at the black boys' table to eat. Julius is not happy there at
first but with some persuasion from the rest, he agrees anyway. The white boys
don't understand what Lastik is up to. Coach Yoast then offers some of his
plays but coach Herman is not interested. Herman discovers that the players
don't know anything about each other at all. He gives a speech telling them
that they must all find out something about each other or else there will be
extra practices.
The setting and atmosphere
Everyone
sits apart and is in shock when Lastik joins the dark boys at the table. Julius
is not happy that Lastik has joined them. The white boys are confused by it.
Herman addresses Lastik and everyone is curious. There is later laughter at
Lastik's answers but it doesn't last long. The boys are angry and frustrated
when coach Herman drops his idea.
The actions and dialogue
When Lastik
joins the dark boys at the table, the others convince Julius that Lastik is
welcome by singing a song. Herman wants to know nothing about Yoast's plays and
decides to talk to the boys. He threatens with extra training if they don’t
start to talk to each other.

The camera angles and shots
They portray
very well that everyone sits separately. White by white, black by black. They make
close-ups of the players and coaches’ heads when they react to something. And during
coach Herman’s speech they zoom in so that only his head is in the picture.
The lightning and sound effects
They make
clever use of music in the scene. During coach Herman’s speech, music begins to
play. The music is inspiring and supports the speech.
The significance of the scene
The scene is very important for the rest of the film. Because of Herman's speech and extra training, the boys have no choice but to talk to each other. This scene actually sets the stage for the friendships the players are going to have. If coach had not done this, the boys would probably never have got to know each other and could never have had such a season.
Ray and Petey getting to know each other
My opinion
I thought
this was the best scene in the film. Mainly because I like the fact that
someone like Lastik, who looks special himself, doesn't care about the fact
that the other boys are black. He sees them as his teammates and friends. It is
nice to see that someone like him has no prejudices. It warms my heart to see
them singing together. I also like that Coach Herman is interested in Lastik his
school plans and motivates him to go to university. I understand
coach's point of view and think it is a smart idea to put in extra training
sessions while the boys don’t try to get to know each other. Because the boys
are already dead after the number of training sessions they have now so it is a good motivation.
